¡No más violencia, no más silencio!

Friends of the Earth International has issued a commitment to prevent sexual violence and harassment within its federation, framing gender justice as essential to its broader struggle for social, environmental, and economic system change.

• Friends of the Earth International defines violence and the threat of violence as tools used to maintain patriarchal power structures and other power relations. This institutionalized, domestic, sexual, verbal, psychological violence, and harassment specifically targets women who deviate from naturalized roles, with heightened impact on Black women, Indigenous women, working-class women, migrants, lesbians, bisexuals, trans, and non-binary people.
• The organization identifies specific manifestations of violence, including sexual harassment of migrant and refugee women by employers, the sexualization of Black women in the workplace, violence used to 'correct' sexual orientation, and increased physical violence against working-class women by police and military during the Covid-19 pandemic. It also notes a significant increase in domestic violence and femicides resulting from Covid-19 stay-at-home orders.
• The Friends of the Earth International Policy on Sexual Violence and Harassment serves as the institutional tool for member groups and regions to implement a zero-tolerance approach. This policy is guided by five core principles: zero tolerance for violence, prevention, a survivor-centered approach, confidentiality and protection, and transparency, effectiveness, and established deadlines.
• The organization prioritizes prevention as the primary method to achieve gender justice and dismantle patriarchy within the federation. This is pursued through political training, capacity building, the creation of safe spaces, and institutional practices to ensure violence and harassment are neither normalized nor tolerated in work and activism environments.
