Internationalist Solidarity with Mozambique

Friends of the Earth International issued a statement of solidarity with the people of Mozambique and the organization Justica Ambiental, condemning state violence and electoral fraud following the October 9 elections. The organization calls for an end to police repression, accountability for killings, and a shift away from neoliberal economic policies that have exacerbated poverty and inequality.

• Following the October 9 elections, in which the Frelimo party was declared the winner, opposition parties and observers reported irregularities such as ballot stuffing and the illegal exclusion of opposition monitors. This has led to youth-led protests across Mozambique, which have been met with a brutal crackdown by police and military forces, resulting in at least 34 confirmed deaths.
• The situation in Mozambique is characterized by escalating state violence, including the use of live ammunition against demonstrators, unlawful detentions, and torture at police stations, primarily targeting youth and children. On October 19, two senior opposition figures were murdered, including the legal advisor to the main presidential candidate contesting the results.
• Despite Mozambique's status as a resource-rich country, 73% of its population lives in poverty. The document attributes this to IMF-imposed neoliberal policies under Frelimo's rule and the export of wealth from fossil fuel, mining, and land use projects, which have led to land grabbing in rural communities and increased inequality.
• Friends of the Earth International and Justica Ambiental demand that the Mozambican state withdraw police forces, end repression, conduct inquiries into police killings, and restore freedom of association and expression, including ending mobile internet restrictions. They further call for a shift in the socio-economic paradigm away from neoliberalism toward a development path that respects the rights of Indigenous Peoples, peasants, and local communities.
