Israeli forces kill dozens at Gaza border as U.S. Embassy opens in Jerusalem

A statement by Friends of the Earth International and Friends of the Earth Asia Pacific condemning the killing of dozens of Palestinians by Israeli forces at the Gaza border on May 14, 2018, coinciding with the opening of the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem.

• On May 14, 2018, Israeli forces used lethal force against unarmed Palestinian protesters at the Gaza border, resulting in more than 60 deaths and over 2,800 injuries, including at least 1,350 caused by gunfire. This event represented the highest single-day death toll of Palestinians by Israelis since the 2014 war against Gaza.
• The violence occurred during the 'Great March of Return' demonstrations, which began on March 30 to demand the return of Palestinian refugees. The May 14 protests coincided with the 70th anniversary of Israel's formation (Nakba Day) and the relocation of the United States Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
• Residents of Gaza have faced a catastrophic situation since the start of an Israeli blockade in 2006, characterized by limited medical services and the fact that 97% of water is unsafe for drinking. These conditions were further exacerbated by cuts to US funding for UN agencies serving Palestinian refugees.
