Llamado a la solidaridad urgente con Colombia ante ola de asesinatos de luchadoras/es sociales en defensa del territorio

A statement by Friends of the Earth Latin America and the Caribbean (ATALC) condemning a wave of killings of land and environmental defenders in Colombia during early 2017, calling for urgent international protection strategies and government action to end impunity.

• In the first 65 days of 2017, 25 women and men defending territories were killed in Colombia, following an estimated 80 such killings in 2016.
• Specific recent victims include José Antonio Anzola Tejedor and his sister Luz Angela, both members of the Communist Party and the Sindicato de Trabajadores Agrícolas Independientes del Meta (SINTRAGRIM), as well as Ruth Alicia López Guisao, a leader of the Coordinador Nacional Agrario (CNA) and the Congreso de los Pueblos, who was killed in Medellín on May 2.
• ATALC suggests that the violence is driven by interests opposed to environmental and social justice, specifically the desire of private and transnational agents to exploit territories for capital accumulation, including extractivist projects and 'green economy' initiatives.
• The organization calls on the Colombian government to use all constitutional and legal mechanisms to stop these attacks and demands the identification of both the material and intellectual authors of the selective killings to prevent impunity.
