Internationalist solidarity with the Garifuna community in Honduras

Friends of the Earth International issued a statement condemning the kidnapping of four members of the Afro-Indigenous Garifuna community from Triunfo de la Cruz, Honduras, and denouncing systematic violence and land dispossession against the Garifuna people.

• On 18 July 2020, four members of the Afro-Indigenous Garifuna Peoples’ organisation of Honduras (OFRANEH) from the Triunfo de la Cruz community—Alberth Snaider Centeno Tomas, Milton Joel Martínez Alvarez, Suami Aparicio Mejía, and Alber Sentana Thomas—were kidnapped from their homes by armed individuals wearing national police uniforms and Police Department of Investigations (DPI) badges.
• The Garifuna community in Honduras faces systematic attacks and land dispossession driven by banana and oil palm companies, land grabbers for tourist and housing developments, and specific entities including the Indura hotel, Punta Izopo National Park, and real estate companies Macerica and Idetrisa.
• The Honduran government has failed to enforce an 8 October 2015 ruling by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACrtHR), which ordered the restitution of land and reparation of damages for the Triunfo de la Cruz community. This ruling requires the state to demarcate and title 2,840 hectares of ancestral territory, restore 22 hectares held by the Tela Workers’ Union, and restore 98 hectares held by Macerica and Idetrisa for the Marbella and Playa Escondida projects.
• The document reports a sharp increase in attacks since 2015, noting that 17 people (11 men and six women) were murdered in 2019. It further asserts that Garifuna peoples have not been consulted on corporate projects, violating the right to Free, Prior and Informed Consent under the International Labor Organization’s (ILO) Convention 169, which Honduras ratified in 1995.
