Solidaridad Internacionalista con las comunidades de Santander, Colombia

Friends of the Earth International issues a statement of solidarity with communities in Santander, Colombia, who are protesting an open-pit coal mining project by the French company Colcco S.A. The organization calls for the Colombian government to protect environmental defenders facing threats from armed groups and to finalize the revocation of the project's environmental license.

• Since January 9, 2023, residents of Barrancabermeja, San Vicente, and El Carmen de Chucurí in the Magdalena Medio region of Santander have protested to demand the revocation of an environmental license granted to the French mining company Colcco S.A. for a 30-year open-pit coal mine. Although the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development announced on January 25 that it would begin the revocation process for the permit issued by the National Authority of Environmental Licenses, no concrete actions have been taken.
• Environmental leaders and protesters have faced threats, intimidation, and surveillance. Specifically, pamphlets and a video from the Autodefensas Gaitanistas de Colombia (AGC), also known as the Clan del Golfo, have designated participants in the anti-mining mobilizations, as well as non-participants, as military targets.
