Solidaridad Internacionalista con las comunidades de Santander, Colombia

Friends of the Earth International condemns the intimidation of environmental leaders in the Magdalena Medio region of Santander, Colombia, who are protesting an open-pit coal mine operated by the French company Colcco S.A. The organization demands the Colombian government ensure the safety of defenders and follow through on the Ministry of Environment's January 25, 2023, announcement to begin revoking the 30-year mining permit.

• Communities in the municipalities of Barrancabermeja, San Vicente, and Carmen de Chucurí have protested for over 20 days to demand the revocation of an environmental license granted to the French mining company Colcco S.A. for a 30-year open-pit coal mining project.
• Environmental leaders and protesters have faced threats, surveillance, and intimidation, including the use of pamphlets and videos from the Autodefensas Gaitanistas de Colombia (AGC), also known as the Clan del Golfo, which designated participants as military targets.
• Although the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development announced on January 25, 2023, that it would start the process to revoke the permit issued by the National Authority of Environmental Licenses, no concrete action has been taken.
