Amigos da Terra Amazonia Brasileira no es un miembro de Amigos de la Tierra Internacional

Friends of the Earth International (ATI) issued a statement clarifying that Amigos da Terra Amazonia Brasileira, led by Roberto Smeraldi, is not a member or ally of the federation and is undermining the work of the official Brazilian member group, Núcleo Amigos da Terra Brasil (AT Brasil).

• Friends of the Earth International (ATI) explicitly states that Amigos da Terra Amazonia Brasileira, led by Roberto Smeraldi, is neither a member nor an ally of the federation. The organization is accused of using the Friends of the Earth name locally and internationally to promote projects that undermine the work of the official Brazilian member group, Núcleo Amigos da Terra Brasil (AT Brasil), as well as the federation's reputation and its relationships with allies.
• The official member group, Núcleo Amigos da Terra Brasil (AT Brasil), is currently campaigning to prevent changes to Brazil's primary forest protection code, which is facing pressure from the agribusiness lobby in the national congress. This work is conducted in partnership with local groups, national networks, and the strategic ally La Vía Campesina.
• Amigos da Terra Amazonia Brasileira is promoting a joint proposal called "Diálogo Forestal" with various NGOs and the paper/cellulose sector. This proposal advocates for market-based mechanisms for forest protection and modifications to the laws protecting forests.
