Solidarité internationaliste avec le peuple Colombien

Friends of the Earth International issued a statement of solidarity with the Colombian people and CENSAT Agua Viva – Amis de la Terre Colombie, condemning systematic violence and human rights violations during national strikes and social mobilizations in 2021.

• The 2021 social mobilizations in Colombia were driven by opposition to a proposed tax reform project that threatened the livelihoods of the population and would have increased social and economic inequality.
• Economic inequality in Colombia is highlighted by the fact that 42.5% of the national population (21 million people) lived below the financial poverty line, with 3.5 million falling below this threshold in 2020, while the Colombian financial system reported net profits of 24,250 billion Colombian pesos (approximately 6.3 billion US dollars) from January to September 2020.
• The document reports a severe humanitarian crisis characterized by the assassination of social movement leaders and community members; specifically, 573 leaders were killed during the first two years of the current government, and 32 massacres occurred in 2021 alone according to INDEPAZ.
• The Colombian government is accused of pursuing a development model that treats nature as a commodity, evidenced by the return of aerial glyphosate spraying, the prioritization of extractive activities for economic recovery, mining in water-essential páramos, and the approval of the first fracking projects in the country.
• Between April 28 and May 4, 2021, the NGO Temblores recorded 1,443 cases of police violence, including 31 deaths, 814 arbitrary arrests, 92 instances of physical violence (including 21 eye attacks), and 10 cases of sexual violence by security forces.
• The statement calls for the Colombian government to end human rights violations, stop the violent repression of peaceful protests, respect Article 37 of the Constitution regarding the right to assemble, and create democratic participation spaces for public policy.
• Signatory organizations demand a comprehensive agrarian reform to build food sovereignty, the demilitarization of territories, the dismantling of state-led paramilitarism, the renegotiation of free trade agreements, and an end to forced eradication of illicit crops and glyphosate spraying.
