Arrested for the first time

A statement by Friends of the Earth President Erich Pica regarding his arrest during a civil disobedience action at the White House to protest the proposed Keystone XL pipeline.

• Erich Pica, President of Friends of the Earth, was arrested at the White House fence alongside 47 other environmental and progressive leaders, including Bill McKibben, Mike Brune, Dr. James Hansen, Daryl Hannah, and Julian Bond, to urge the Obama administration to deny approval for the Keystone XL pipeline.
• The protest action aimed to represent the interests of communities in Texas and Nebraska fighting the pipeline, as well as Friends of the Earth members globally who are calling for action against climate chaos.
• The author notes that 1,253 people were previously arrested in 2011 in similar efforts to send a message to the president to reject the Keystone XL pipeline.
