Friends of the Earth International statement on Standing Rock

Friends of the Earth International expresses solidarity with water protectors at Standing Rock, condemning the Dakota Access Pipeline for threatening Native American sacred territories and drinking water. The statement denounces the use of military tactics and weapons by U.S. security forces against peaceful protesters and calls for the U.S. government to withdraw permits and for global banks to cease financing the project.

• The Dakota Access Pipeline, spanning over 1000 miles across several U.S. states, is viewed as an existential threat to the Standing Rock Sioux tribe's culture and way of life because it passes within half a mile of their reservation, risking the destruction of sacred sites and contaminating drinking water.

• A credit agreement for up to $2.5 billion was signed between Dakota Access LLC, Energy Transfer Crude Oil Company LLC, and a group of global banks, led by Citigroup, to fund the Dakota Access Pipeline and the Energy Transfer Crude Oil Pipeline.
• Friends of the Earth International demands that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the executive branch withdraw permits for the pipeline and calls on financiers to adhere to the principles of Free Prior and Informed Consent as established by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
