Hoffman Rewrite of National Park Policies Threatens Americas Heritage

A joint press statement from Friends of the Earth, the National Parks Conservation Association, Natural Resources Defense Council, and The Wilderness Society urging the Department of Interior to abandon a secret rewrite of national park policies led by Paul Hoffman.

• Conservation groups and National Park Service professionals express unprecedented concern that Paul Hoffman, deputy assistant secretary of the Department of Interior for fish and wildlife and parks, has secretly rewritten policies protecting national parks. The groups argue these revisions "depart radically from the fundamental stewardship ethic" and could harm parks including Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon, and Gettysburg, while compromising the experience of visitors.
• The coalition of National Park Service retirees scheduled a press conference call for August 26, 2005, to discuss the potential effectsS effects of the Hoffman rewrite on national parks.
