Don’t let Chrysler bail on its electric vehicle promises

Friends of the Earth criticizes Chrysler for abandoning its electric vehicle production goals after receiving $15.3 billion in taxpayer-funded bailout money, warning of significant increases in carbon dioxide emissions.

• Chrysler received $15.3 billion in taxpayer-funded bailout money, partly based on promises to invest in electric vehicle technology and a goal to have 500,000 electric-drive vehicles on the road by 2013.
• Chrysler has disbanded its electric vehicle team and significantly reduced its production targets, with CEO Sergio Marchionne projecting annual sales of only 28,000 to 56,000 electric vehicles by 2014.
• The Friends of the Earth policy team estimates that Chrysler's cancellation of its electric vehicle program could result in more than one million extra tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually starting in 2014.
