Distributed Energy Resources: Policy Implications of Decentralization

This whitepaper, part of America’s Power Plan, examines how distributed energy resources (DERs), described as 'the internet of electricity,' shift the electricity sector away from a traditional centralized structure and proposes three policy options to accelerate a renewable electricity future.

• The document proposes three specific policy recommendations to expand distributed energy resources to achieve a renewable electricity future: conducting analyses of costs, benefits, and trade-offs; adapting utility business models and wholesale market structures to create a competitive environment between new distributed resources and traditional centralized energy; and promoting innovation in services and technology to speed up the adoption of renewable and distributed resources.
