Country and region analysis
Summary
In the first half of 2023, global power sector emissions plateaued (+0.2%) as emissions declines in the US and EU offset a 7.9% jump in China. China led global renewable growth, accounting for 67% of wind and solar increases, but severe droughts caused a 22% drop in hydropower, forcing a record high in coal generation. In the US, power sector emissions fell 8.6% due to a 27% drop in coal generation driven by coal-to-gas switching and a 3.4% decline in electricity demand. The EU also saw a 17% drop in power sector emissions resulting from falling demand and increasing renewables.
Key insights
- China dominated global renewable energy growth in the first half of 2023, providing 67% of the global increase in wind and solar generation. Wind generation in China grew by 26% (+99 TWh) and solar grew by 21% (+44 TWh), resulting in wind and solar providing 17% of China's electricity in H1-2023.
- Despite renewable growth, China's power sector emissions rose 7.9% (+173 million tonnes of CO2) in H1-2023. This was primarily caused by a 22% drop in hydropower output due to droughts, which created a shortfall filled by coal generation, which increased 8% (+203 TWh) to a record high.
