From fossil flows to renewable cooperation - tripling renewables in the Med

- Algeria is expected to see significant relative growth in renewables through its Renewable Energy Development Programme, targeting 16 GW of solar, 5 GW of wind, and 1 GW of other technologies, which is nearly a 40-fold increase from its 2023 capacity of 0.6 GW.
- The report notes a shift in energy cooperation from a historical model of one-way fossil fuel flows from South to North toward balanced regional collaboration. This is evidenced by the 2024 EU-Egypt Strategic Partnership and the TeraMed Initiative, launched in September 2024 at Cairo Energy Week.
- To support the surge in renewables and a net-zero transition, substantial investments in grids and storage are required. OMEC projections suggest energy storage will need to rise from 1-2% of total power generation by 2030 to 10% by 2050.
