China accounted for 53% of this global increase in solar generation, and its clean generation growth met 81% of its own electricity demand increase for the year. Global solar capacity doubled from 1 TW in 2022 to 2 TW in 2024.
- Global electricity demand grew by 4.0% in 2024, significantly higher than the 2% growth in 2023. Heatwaves increased the demand for cooling, adding 208 TWh (0.7%) to global demand. This surge led to a 1.4% increase in fossil fuel electricity generation, resulting in record-high sector emissions of 14.6 billion tonnes of CO2. Without the impact of high temperatures, fossil fuel generation would have increased by only 0.2%, as clean energy met 99% of the demand not related to heatwaves.
- Future electricity demand is being driven by structural shifts, including electric vehicles, heat pumps, and data centers, which now contribute 0.7 to annual demand growth—more than double their contribution from five years ago. Ember projects that clean energy growth will be sufficient to meet demand even if it grows at 4.1% annually until 2030, particularly as China and India transition toward clean energy-led demand growth.
