Tracking national ambition towards a global tripling of renewables

This document describes the data collection methodology and definitions used by Ember to track national ambitions for renewable energy deployment in the power sector across 57 countries and the European Union, focusing on targets for 2030.

• Ember collected national ambition data for the power sector from 57 countries and the EU, defining ambition as targets for cumulative renewable capacity in gigawatts (GW) or the share of renewables in total generation by 2030.
• The sum of the national renewable capacity targets collected for the 58 countries and regions is 6,738 GW, with the EU's target used to represent all its member countries.
• Ember categorizes targets into three types: explicit targets found in official government policy documents, implicit targets based on official projections or credible third-party studies, and derived targets estimated by Ember for 2030 based on targets for other years.
• Russia and Austria were identified as the two countries in the dataset with no capacity targets, while 17 countries lacked share of generation targets.
• The analysis notes a discrepancy in solar capacity reporting between alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC), where DC is typically 10% to 30% higher; however, Ember used data as reported without conversion due to a lack of clarity on reporting standards.
