Türkiye Electricity Review 2025

The Türkiye Electricity Review 2025 reports that wind and solar power permanently overtook domestic coal generation in 2024, exceeding domestic coal's historic peak. While the total share of fossil fuels reached its lowest level since 1993, electricity demand growth continues to outpace the deployment of renewables.

• In 2024, wind and solar power generation in Türkiye permanently overtook domestic coal, reaching a combined share of over 18% of electricity generation. Solar power grew by a record 39% year-on-year, increasing its share from 5.7% in 2023 to 7.5% in 2024, while wind remained steady at 10.7%. Total generation from wind and solar was 62 TWh, which exceeded domestic coal's 47 TWh and surpassed domestic coal's historic peak of 53 TWh recorded in 2019.
• The share of fossil fuels in Türkiye's power generation fell to 55% in 2024, the lowest level since 1993. Although coal generation increased by 4 TWh, its share of the electricity mix declined from 36.9% to 35.6%, and gas power fell by 3 TWh (-4%). Türkiye has now overtaken Germany as the European country with the highest amount of coal power generation.
• Renewable energy deployment is currently failing to keep pace with electricity demand growth; over the last five years, demand increased by 42 TWh while wind and solar additions totaled 31 TWh. However, new installed capacity targets for 2035 announced at COP29 aim to quadruple current wind and solar capacity, which could potentially reduce the fossil power generation share to below 20% and increase the wind and solar share to 49%.
