EU can stop Russian gas imports by 2025

A briefing by Ember, E3G, RAP, and Bellona stating that the European Union can eliminate all Russian fossil gas imports by 2025 through the accelerated deployment of clean energy and efficiency measures, rather than new gas infrastructure.

• The European Union has the capacity to end all imports of Russian fossil gas by 2025, which is two years ahead of the European Commission's 2027 target. This goal can be met without building new gas import infrastructure or delaying the phase-out of coal power generation.
• Implementing the EU's Fit for 55 package, alongside increased electrification, energy efficiency, and renewable electricity deployment, could reduce Russian gas imports by 66%, representing a decrease of 101 billion cubic meters (bcm) by 2025.
• New gas import infrastructure, such as LNG terminals, is unnecessary for ensuring security of supply or reducing dependence on Russian gas, as 51 bcm of gas imports can be sourced via existing assets.
• To achieve these goals, the EU should prioritize energy efficiency as an energy security priority, remove incentives that perpetuate gas consumption, and provide investment support for clean heating and demand-side flexibility.
