Fall in EU gas demand

An Ember report analyzing National Energy and Climate Plans (NECPs) indicates that EU gas demand is in terminal decline, with a projected 7% decrease by 2030 compared to 2023 levels, while the bloc shifts toward a more electrified economy powered by clean electricity.

• The EU's total gas demand is projected to decrease by 7% by 2030 compared to 2023, falling from 326 billion cubic meters (bcm) to 302 bcm. This follows a previous sharp decline from 404 bcm in 2021 to 326 bcm in 2023, suggesting that gas demand is in terminal decline.
• There is a risk of over-investment in gas infrastructure; Ember analysis indicates that by 2030, the EU's LNG import capacity will have increased by 54% relative to 2023, a level that significantly exceeds projected demand.
