• Governor Greg Abbott opposes license applications submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for consolidated interim storage of spent nuclear fuel and high-level waste at proposed sites in Texas and New Mexico, specifically those near the Texas border.
• The proposed storage facilities are located in the Permian Basin Region, which is described as the largest producing oilfield in the world. In 2019, oil production in this region exceeded 1.5 billion barrels, with 80 percent produced in Texas. In 2018, the region produced over 30 percent of total U.S. crude oil and held more than 40 percent of proved oil reserves.
• The NRC is evaluating 40-year licenses for two specific entities: Interim Storage Partners (ISP) for a facility in west Texas, and Holtec International for a facility in southeastern New Mexico. The ISP facility would store commercial spent nuclear fuel and reactor-related materials, and ISP may seek a 20-year license renewal, potentially extending the operating life to 60 years.
