TERMS TO KNOW HYDROGEN

This fact sheet from the Environmental and Energy Study Institute provides a glossary of technical terms related to hydrogen production, storage, and vehicle technology.

• Clean hydrogen is defined by a specific carbon intensity threshold, requiring that the production process generates 2 kilograms of carbon dioxide-equivalent or less per kilogram of hydrogen produced at the production site.
• Hydrogen production methods include electrolysis, which uses electricity to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen atoms, and steam reforming, a method commonly used for bulk generation that reacts a hydrocarbon fuel with steam.
• A zero-emission motor vehicle is defined as being propelled either by an electric motor drawing from a rechargeable battery with a capacity of at least four kilowatt hours, or by power from cells that convert chemical energy to electricity by combining oxygen with on-board hydrogen fuel.
