RECOVERY ACT HIGH SPEED RAIL AWARDS

This fact sheet details the distribution of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) grants for high-speed rail projects across four US regions: West, Midwest, Southeast, and Northeast, as well as additional planning awards.

• The West Region received the highest allocation of funding at $2,942,000,000. The largest single project in this region is the California High-Speed Rail West, which focuses on "purchasing right-of-way, constructing track, signaling systems, and stations, and completing environmental reviews and engineering documents."
• The Midwest Region was awarded $2,599,600,000. Key projects include improvements to the Chicago - St. Louis corridor to allow speeds "up to 110 mph" and a project in Wisconsin (Madison - Milwaukee) involving "new and refurbished stations" and positive train control technology over 80 miles of track.
• The Southeast Region received $1,870,000,000. Major initiatives include the Tampa - Orlando (Phase 1 HSR) project to "construct 84 miles of track, build and enhance stations, and purchase equipment," and projects in North Carolina to increase top speeds to 90 mph and "double the number of round trips" on the Raleigh - Charlotte corridor.
• The Northeast Region was allocated $485,000,000. Funding covers various corridors, including the restoration of over 30 miles of track to extend service from Portland to Brunswick, ME, and the completion of engineering for a "new tunnel in Baltimore and a new station at BWI Airport."
• An additional $26,650,000 was awarded for other projects and planning studies. Planning studies were funded for several states, including "Alabama, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, New Mexico, Vermont and West Virginia".
