Statement on Updated EPA Standards for Wood Heating Equipment

Earthjustice issued a statement regarding the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) final rule to update air pollution performance standards for new residential wood heaters, a move prompted by a legal challenge filed by Earthjustice on behalf of several health and environmental organizations.

• The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a final rule updating air pollution performance standards for new residential wood heaters, such as furnaces, which emit particulate matter, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds, hazardous air pollutants, and carcinogens. These updated standards apply exclusively to the manufacture of new units and do not impact heaters already manufactured or installed.
• The update to the standards follows a legal challenge filed by Earthjustice on behalf of the American Lung Association, Environmental Defense Fund, Clean Air Council, and Environment and Human Health, Inc., alleging that the EPA failed to update the standards as mandated by the Clean Air Act.
• The original standards for wood heaters were established in 1988. Under the Clean Air Act, the EPA is required to review these safeguards every eight years to incorporate current data and technology, as residential wood heaters can now be built to burn cleaner and safer.
