Defending Yellowstone National Park from Industrial Gold Mining

Earthjustice, representing the Greater Yellowstone Coalition and Park County Environmental Council, filed a lawsuit on September 22, 2017, to challenge the Montana Department of Environmental Quality's approval of gold mineral exploration by Lucky Minerals in Emigrant Gulch, Paradise Valley.

• On September 22, 2017, the Greater Yellowstone Coalition and Park County Environmental Council filed a lawsuit against the Montana Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). The lawsuit challenges the DEQ's July 26, 2017, approval of mineral exploration in Emigrant Gulch by Lucky Minerals, a Canadian company aiming to develop a "multi-million ounce gold" mine.
• The proposed exploration involves drilling 24 hours a day from July 15 to October 15 for two consecutive years. Opponents argue this industrial activity in the Paradise Valley, which includes Yellowstone River tributaries, threatens the local tourism economy that relies on public land access and clean water.
• While the U.S. Forest Service and Department of Interior proposed on November 21, 2016, to withdraw 30,000 acres of land in Paradise Valley from mineral development for up to 20 years, this does not stop Lucky Minerals' exploration on adjacent private property. Permanent protections were sought via the Yellowstone Gateway Protection Act pending in the U.S. Senate at the time of the lawsuit.
