Protecting Seneca Lake from the Gas Industry

Earthjustice and the Gas Free Seneca coalition are opposing gas storage projects proposed by subsidiaries of Inergy Midstream on the shores of Seneca Lake in western New York, citing risks to the local tourism economy, ecology, and drinking water for over 100,000 people.

• Subsidiaries of the Kansas City-based company Inergy Midstream have submitted two proposals for gas storage infrastructure in underground salt caverns on the shores of Seneca Lake. One proposal seeks to store 88 million gallons of liquid petroleum gas, while the second aims to expand natural gas storage capacity at the site to 2 billion cubic feet.
• The proposed projects face opposition from residents, business owners, and elected officials who argue the infrastructure would jeopardize the ecology of Seneca Lake, threaten the local tourism economy, and risk a drinking water source used by more than 100,000 people.
• The projects require approval from the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Earthjustice and Gas Free Seneca are advocating for a full examination of cumulative impacts, including air quality, noise, traffic, and community character.
