Earthjustice Statement on Lease Sale in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

• The Coastal Plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is considered sacred by the Indigenous Gwich’in people, who depend on the area as the calving grounds for the Porcupine Caribou Herd for their subsistence and cultural needs.
• The lease sale was required by a leasing program established under the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act to increase federal revenues. Earthjustice challenged the Trump administration's proposed program via a lawsuit in August 2020, and the Biden administration subsequently cancelled leases from a 2021 Coastal Plain sale in September 2023.
