Americans Oppose Drilling in Arctic National Wildlife Refuge

A survey of 1,097 registered U.S. voters found that 67% oppose oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), with strong opposition outnumbering strong support by nearly four to one. Opposition is highest among Democrats (81%) and Independents (64%), while half of Republicans (50%) also oppose the practice.

• A majority of American registered voters oppose oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), with 67% (two out of three) expressing opposition. Those who are strongly opposed to the policy outnumber those who strongly support it by nearly four to one.
• Opposition to drilling in the ANWR is found across political affiliations, including 81% of Democrats, 64% of Independents, and 50% of Republicans. Only 17% of Republicans reported that they "strongly support" the policy.
• The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is already being impacted by global warming, and a U.S. Department of the Interior Bureau of Land Management report indicates that many species nesting in the Coastal Plain are seeing population decreases and could face catastrophic consequences from climate change.
