Climate on Cable

The study finds that Fox News employs a more dismissive tone toward climate change and features more doubters than CNN and MSNBC. Survey data indicates a negative association between Fox News viewership and the acceptance of global warming, while viewing CNN and MSNBC correlates with greater acceptance. This effect is more pronounced among Republicans, whose beliefs vary significantly based on the news outlet they watch, whereas Democrats' beliefs remain relatively stable regardless of cable news use.

• Content analysis of coverage during 2007 and 2008 shows that Fox News is more dismissive of climate change and interviews a higher proportion of climate change doubters compared to CNN and MSNBC.
• There is a negative correlation between watching Fox News and accepting global warming, whereas watching CNN and MSNBC is linked to higher acceptance levels, even when controlling for confounding factors.
• The influence of cable news on global warming beliefs is stronger for Republicans than for Democrats; Republicans' views are strongly linked to their chosen news outlet, while Democrats' beliefs do not vary significantly by cable news use.
