The Geneva Pledge for Human Rights in Climate Action

The Geneva Pledge, signed by 19 nations in February 2015, commits governments to foster collaboration between their human rights and climate change experts. The signatories acknowledge that climate change disproportionately affects vulnerable populations and pledge to ensure that the transition to a low-carbon economy respects human rights and ensures no one is left behind.

• The signatory governments recognize that climate change impacts affect people globally but are most severe for those in vulnerable situations due to factors including poverty, gender, age, disability, and indigenous or minority status.
• The pledging nations commit to increasing the collaboration between their representatives in the UNFCCC and the Human Rights Council (HRC) by exchanging expertise and including human rights knowledge in UNFCCC delegations and climate expertise in the HRC.
• The governments aim to ensure that the transition to a low-carbon economy is inclusive and respects human rights to avoid leaving the poorest and most vulnerable people behind.
