Joint letter in support of the ENVI report on the MRV revision

A joint letter from civil society organisations advocating for the inclusion of the shipping sector in the EU Emissions Trading System and the implementation of a -40% GHG efficiency target by 2030 to address rising maritime emissions.

• The proposed revision of the MRV regulation aims to increase transparency in monitoring shipping emissions, apply the "polluter pays" principle by expanding the EU ETS to shipping, introduce a linear -40% GHG efficiency target for shipping companies by 2030, and mandate that ships stop emitting GHGs and harmful air pollutants when docked in ports by 2030.
• Shipping is currently the only sector in the EU not subject to emission reduction targets, despite EU-related CO2 emissions from maritime transport being comparable to those of Belgium and accounting for 13% of total EU transport emissions.
• Climate pollution from shipping grew 10% over the last six years, with methane emissions specifically increasing by 150% in the same period due to the increased use of liquified natural gas (LNG) ships.
