Climate Shift Index Alert

From June 18-20, 2024, a major to extreme heat event is forecast for the eastern half of the U.S., affecting over 25 million people. The event is characterized by record-level high temperatures in major cities and elevated nighttime temperatures. Climate Central's Climate Shift Index (CSI) indicates that human-caused climate change has made this heat at least four times more likely in several states, including West Virginia, Ohio, and Indiana.

• Between June 18 and June 20, 2024, more than 25 million people in the eastern half of the United States will experience heat that human-caused climate change has made at least four times more likely.
• Major metropolitan areas including Boston, New York City, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cleveland, and Indianapolis are forecast to see record-level high temperatures ranging from 94°F to 99°F.
• Heat index values are expected to reach 105°F in several states, including Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois.
• In West Virginia, Ohio, and Indiana, daily average temperatures are expected to reach Climate Shift Index (CSI) level 4, which signifies an extreme climate change event where human-caused climate change made the heat at least four times more likely.
• Nighttime temperatures in the Lower Midwest are forecast to be 10°F to 15°F above average, ranging from 70°F to 76°F, which may break records and limit heat relief.
