COP26 is a pivotal moment for Canada and the world

The author asserts that COP26 is a pivotal moment to act on climate change, noting that global warming is accelerating and Canada is warming twice as fast as the global average. The text highlights the human cost, citing 569 deaths in British Columbia from a heat wave, and the economic risk, noting that weather-related disasters have cost Canada 5 to 6 per cent of annual GDP growth since 2010. It emphasizes that achieving net zero emissions globally by 2050 could still limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

• Canada is experiencing warming at a rate twice as fast as the global average, increasing the risk of catastrophic consequences from floods, fires, and heat waves.
• The human cost of climate change is already evident in Canada, exemplified by the death of 569 people in British Columbia during a heat wave in the summer of 2021.
• Climate-related disasters have had an increasing impact on Canada's economy, with costs amounting to approximately 5 to 6 per cent of annual GDP growth since 2010, compared to a historical average of 1 per cent.
• According to IPCC projections, limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and avoiding catastrophic tipping points is still possible if net zero emissions are achieved globally by 2050.
