Un llamado a fortalecer la educación sobre el cambio climático para todos los profesionales de la salud

The WHO-Civil Society Working Group issued an open letter calling for the mandatory integration of climate and health education into all health professional curricula. Citing a global lack of such programs and institutional barriers, the group urges academic leaders and accreditation bodies to equip health workers to handle climate-related health risks. The document provides examples of existing courses in the Caribbean, Latin America, Brazil, and Kiribati, and references core competencies developed by the Global Consortium for Climate and Health Education (GCCHE).

• The WHO-Civil Society Working Group urges health professional training institutes, accreditation bodies, and licensing agencies to ensure graduates are equipped to recognize, prevent, and respond to the health impacts of environmental degradation and climate change. This is framed as an ethical and professional responsibility, as climate change already affects health systems and disproportionately impacts indigenous and disadvantaged communities.
• Current global education for health professionals is insufficient regarding climate change. A recent survey indicated a worldwide lack of climate change educational programs for future physicians, often focusing only on students. Additionally, a survey of 160 health professional schools identified institutional lack of support as a significant barrier to integrating climate and health content into curricula.
