- Indonesia is the world's largest emitter of wastewater methane. The report notes that 31% of the rural population uses pit latrines as the primary wastewater treatment source. Implementing anaerobic treatment with gas collection could reduce wastewater greenhouse gas emissions by 52% to 87% compared to current levels.
- India faces significant wastewater challenges, with all its treatment plants combined only capable of treating 37% of the country's generated wastewater. As of 2010, 50% of the country (652 million people) relied on open defecation, the highest per capita rate in the world.
- The Philippines' 2019 National Strategy to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants targets having 50% of landfills equipped with greenhouse gas capture systems and diverting 24% of organic waste to composting by 2030 (relative to 2010 levels).
