OPEN LETTER

A coalition of 58 European organisations is calling for the immediate adoption of an Implementing Regulation to standardise pesticide use records. They argue that such harmonisation is a prerequisite for the annual collection of pesticide data under the new Statistics for Agriculture Input and Output (SAIO) regulation, which is currently slated to begin in 2028. The signatories emphasize that precise data is essential for protecting biodiversity, agricultural workers, and rural residents, and they request that the European Commission publish the draft regulation for civil society review and ensure formal adoption by the end of 2022.

• The annual collection of pesticide use data under the new SAIO regulation is contingent upon the adoption of an Implementing Regulation that harmonises the content and format of pesticide use records, with the collection process currently expected to start only in 2028.
• The European Commission has stated its intention to adopt the Implementing Regulation by the end of 2022, with the goal of ensuring that records kept by professional users of plant protection products are available in electronic format by 1 January 2025 at the latest.
