Green Bond Highlights 2017

In 2017, global green bond issuance grew by 78% to reach USD 155.5 billion, driven largely by the US, China, and France. The market saw a significant increase in sovereign and sub-sovereign issuance, including the first African sovereign green bond from Nigeria. While renewable energy remains the most common use of proceeds, there was a notable rise in allocations for low-carbon buildings and energy efficiency. The report highlights a trend toward the diversification of financial instruments, such as Green MBS and Green Sukuk, and an ongoing effort to unify regional green finance standards.

• Global green bond issuance in 2017 reached USD 155.5 billion, representing a 78% growth over 2016. The market included over 1,500 issues from 239 different issuers across 37 countries on all six continents, with 146 new issuers making their debut.
• The United States, China, and France accounted for 56% of the 2017 issuance. The US Agency Fannie Mae was the largest single issuer with USD 24.9 billion in labelled Green MBS. France issued the largest single green bond ever at EUR 9.7 billion (USD 10.7 billion).
