Climate Bonds Scientific Framework

The Climate Bonds Scientific Framework provides a scientifically grounded analysis of emission mitigation pathways and technology options to anchor the Climate Bonds Taxonomy and certification criteria of the Climate Bonds Standard.

• The Climate Bonds Scientific Framework serves as the scientific basis for the Climate Bonds Taxonomy and the certification criteria of the Climate Bonds Standard, ensuring they align with current climate science. It provides the foundation for developing sector-specific eligibility criteria for debt issuances seeking Climate Bond certification.
• The Framework is overseen by the Climate Bond Initiative Board and implemented by Climate Bonds staff, Climate Wedge, and a network of research institutions reviewed by the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK). The underlying research is a joint effort between IIASA in Austria and Climate Analytics in Germany, utilizing research on emission pathways and technology alternatives, including data from the IPCC’s 5th assessment report.
• Research within the Framework emphasizes the role of various technology categories in limiting the growth of global average surface temperatures to a 2°C cap.
