This guide outlines the Deforestation and Conversion-Free (DCF) Sourcing Criteria developed by the Climate Bonds Initiative to certify agri-food entities that source commodities from areas free of deforestation and natural ecosystem conversion. The criteria aim to align global financial markets with the 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement by providing a science-based certification process for traders, processors, and manufacturers.

• The DCF Sourcing Criteria apply to any agri-food product produced on or dependent on land production, including aquaculture dependent on feed. This specifically includes high-risk commodities such as cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, soy, and cellulose/paper for food packaging, as well as all other animal-origin and agri-food products. Products excluded from the scope are non-agri-food items like timber, processed commodities (e.g., paints, personal hygiene products), bioenergy, and leather.
• The certification framework aligns with the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) for deforestation requirements and the Accountability Framework initiative (AFi) for conversion requirements, as the EUDR does not currently cover conversion. The criteria establish a cut-off date of December 31, 2020, meaning the applicant entity's supply chain must be free of deforestation and natural ecosystem conversion from that date forward.
• To be eligible for certification, agri-food entities—including traders, processors, and manufacturers—must generate at least 50% of their revenue from agri-food supply chains. The certification is valid for 5 years and requires external review by a Climate Bonds approved verifier.
• The criteria mandate full traceability for all agri-food products representing at least 1% of the entity's procurement spending. Traceability requirements vary by risk level: high-risk origins (including cattle, cocoa, coffee, palm oil, cellulose/paper, and soy) require geolocation of the original production land (polygons for areas > 4ha or a single point for < 4ha). Low-risk origins require tracking to the country of origin or primary processing facility.
• Compliance requires a multi-step process including risk classification, due diligence, and monitoring. High-risk origins require information collection followed by risk assessment and mitigation, while low-risk origins use simplified due diligence. Additionally, entities must implement human rights and Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC/PICL) safeguards at the producer level and publicly disclose annual verification reports and level 1 supplier lists for high-risk countries.
