Climate Bonds Guide to Certification ASSETS

The Climate Bonds Standard and Certification Scheme provides a voluntary labelling system for investments and assets consistent with limiting global temperature rise to 1.5C. The guide details the asset certification process, distinguishing between static and dynamic certifications, and specifies the requirements for Level 1 Certification, which applies to assets aligned with 1.5 degree pathways.

• The Climate Bonds Standard and Certification Scheme is a voluntary labelling system designed to ensure investments are consistent with the goal of limiting global temperature rise to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. Since its launch in 2012, the scheme has certified over USD 270 billion of Use of Proceeds Green Bonds.
• Asset certification is available for owners of assets, projects, or portfolios that meet specific Sector Eligibility Criteria, and is independent of the financing of those assets. Level 1 Certification is reserved for assets already aligned with 1.5 degree pathways, including those near net-zero or those with transition plans predicting such alignment.
• The scheme distinguishes between two types of asset certification: Static certification, where the asset composition remains unchanged over a 12-month period, and Dynamic certification, where new assets can be added to a pool, requiring the Approved Verifier to assess the owner's selection controls and procedures.
• The certification process requires the submission of a Certification Agreement, a Certification Information Form, and a Verification Report. Certification is awarded by Climate Bonds following an independent assessment by a network of Approved Verifiers and oversight by an international independent Climate Bonds Standard Board.
