Summary
This fact sheet describes the China Climate Bonds Index, a fixed-income investment index designed to identify bonds supporting low-carbon and climate-resilient infrastructure in China. Developed by the China Central Government Bond Depository Center, CECEP Consulting, and the Climate Bonds Initiative (CBI), the index includes both labeled green bonds and ordinary corporate bonds used for green projects.
Key insights
- The China Climate Bonds Index consists of 210 bonds with a total scale of 1.3 trillion RMB. As of the reporting date, the index has an average maturity of 7.14 years and an average coupon rate of 4.88%, with a base date of December 31, 2009.
- The index is heavily dominated by the transportation sector, which accounts for 91% of the total issuance, while the energy sector accounts for only 1%. Other sectors include climate adaptation (4%) and multi-sector green bonds (4%). The dominance of transportation is attributed to better information disclosure by railway entities, the single-purpose nature of railway bonds compared to mixed-use energy bonds, and the large, investment-grade scale of railway bonds.
