Green Bond Fact Sheet

The City of Toronto issued a CAD 300 million green debenture on August 1, 2018, to fund sustainable transport and related infrastructure. As the second Canadian city to issue green bonds, Toronto's framework also allows for investments in renewable energy, green buildings (requiring LEED Gold or Toronto Green Standard Tier 2), water and waste management, and climate resilience.

• The proceeds from this debut deal are designated to finance sustainable transport projects and associated infrastructure, specifically including public transport systems and electric and hybrid vehicles.
• The City of Toronto's Green Bond Framework includes several eligible categories: waste management, water management, green buildings, renewable energy, adaptation/resilience, and the integration of circular economy principles or eco-efficiency.
• For buildings to be eligible, they must meet a minimum standard such as LEED Gold, Toronto Green Standard Tier 2, or an equivalent certification. Eligibility extends to energy efficiency retrofits for private buildings via programs like the Hi-rise Retrofit Improvement Support and the Home Energy Loan Program.
• The City of Toronto is the second city in Canada to issue green bonds, following the City of Ottawa.
