Sembrando un planeta de plástico

This fact sheet from the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) highlights the environmental and health risks associated with the intentional addition of microplastics to synthetic fertilizers and pesticides used in industrial agriculture.

• The agro-industrial sector is a major user of intentionally added microplastics, which are dispersed into agricultural soils through plastic-coated fertilizers and pesticides. While producers market the "controlled release" of these chemicals as a feature for climate-friendly and sustainable agriculture, this practice represents a direct and avoidable source of plastic pollution that may worsen the harmful effects of agrochemicals on health and the environment.
• Microplastics are accumulating globally, including in remote areas, leading to human ingestion and inhalation of plastics and their associated toxins. CIEL's report, "Sembrando un Planeta de Plástico," identifies the intentional use of microplastics in agriculture as part of a "toxic triad" consisting of agrochemicals, plastics, and fossil fuels.
• CIEL calls on governments to urgently address regulatory gaps and implement extensive bans on the intentional use of microplastics within agriculture and other industrial sectors.
