OPEN LETTER

An open letter from the Center for International Environmental Law and other organizations calling on global leaders to end offshore oil and gas activities to protect human rights, the right to food, and marine ecosystems in the context of climate change.

• Offshore oil and gas projects contribute to the degradation of the marine environment, including ecosystem imbalance and biodiversity loss, while undermining the access of fishing communities to a sustainable, healthy, and safe food supply.
• Over 30% of new oil and gas projects are located in the world's oceans, and the expansion of coastal infrastructure and shipping routes for LNG production makes ending these activities essential for limiting global temperature rise to below 1.5C.
• The letter references a United Nations report on Fisheries and the right to food in the context of climate change, which recommends that States reject the expansion of offshore oil and gas projects, suspend detrimental ongoing projects, address climate and biodiversity impacts prior to project approval or financing, and implement periodic audits of oil loading operations with compensation for environmental damage.
• The undersigned organizations urge global leaders to rapidly and equitably phase out the use and production of oil and gas, including offshore activities, and transition toward sustainable and renewable energy sources.
