53rd Session ofthe Human Rights Council Interactive Dialogue with the UN Secretary-General

A statement by the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) during the 53rd Session of the Human Rights Council, supporting the UN Secretary-General's report on the right to food and climate change and calling for a transition away from fossil-fuel-dependent industrial agriculture and risky geoengineering.

• Industrial food production is closely linked to the fossil fuel industry, specifically through the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. These inputs release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere and may reduce the capacity of soil to sequester carbon.
• Geoengineering technologies, such as solar radiation modification and large-scale carbon removal in oceans or on land, pose risks to food security, ecosystems, livelihoods, and regional weather patterns.
• To address climate and planetary crises, states should move away from fossil fuel reliance and unproven technologies in favor of regenerative agricultural models that support food and energy sovereignty and protect human rights defenders, including local, rural, and Indigenous communities.
