55th Session of the Human Rights Council Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food, 7 March 2024

A joint statement by the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) and Earthjustice submitted to the 55th Session of the Human Rights Council, arguing that offshore oil and gas activities are incompatible with the human rights of small-scale fishers and the global goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C.

• Offshore oil and gas activities are viewed as incompatible with the human rights of artisanal fishers and fish workers, posing threats to food security and ocean health across every stage of the industry lifecycle, including exploration, drilling, processing, transport, and well abandonment.
• The expansion of offshore oil and gas, which accounts for over 30 percent of new projects, along with increased coastal infrastructure for LNG production, undermines human rights and regional food security by worsening the climate crisis. Halting this expansion is described as essential for maintaining a global temperature rise limit of 1.5°C.
• The statement supports the Special Rapporteur's recommendations that States ensure the meaningful participation of Indigenous Peoples and small-scale fishing communities in decision-making regarding offshore fossil fuel projects, and that States suspend any such activities that deprive these groups of fundamental human rights.
