A letter from the CITES Secretary General to Greenpeace International clarifying the status of the Review of Significant Trade in Afrormosia (Pericopsis elata) from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

• The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has been eliminated from the Review of Significant Trade for Pericopsis elata because it complied with recommendations from the Plants Committee. This compliance included the submission of a non-detriment findings (NDF) report in the first week of June 2014, which the CITES Secretariat described as "technically robust".
• The NDF report for Pericopsis elata in the DRC was a collaborative effort involving the DRC Scientific Authority, the regional coordinator of the ITTO-CITES programme (Dr Jean Lagarde), and EU-FLEGT colleagues in Kinshasa acting under the request of the European Commission in Brussels.
• At the 62nd meeting of the Standing Committee in Geneva in July 2012, an export quota for Pericopsis elata from the Democratic Republic of the Congo was set at 25,000 m3 for 2012, to remain in effect until the results of the NDF project became available.
• The CITES Secretariat manages the approval and publication of requests for export quotas according to Resolution Conf. 14.7 (rev. CoP15), noting that bilateral communications with Parties regarding these matters are not public documents.
