Right to a Healthy Environment and the Convention on the Rights of the Child

The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) submitted a request to the Committee on the Rights of the Child urging the formal articulation of a child's right to a healthy environment as an implied right within the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

• CIEL argues that the Committee on the Rights of the Child should articulate the right of the child to a healthy environment as an implied right within the Convention on the Rights of the Child to clarify the responsibilities of States to protect children from environmental harms.
• The recognition of an implied right to a healthy environment is intended to provide three specific benefits: increased protection for children, acknowledgment of the connections between the environment and protected rights, and the identification of necessary preconditions for fulfilling all rights under the Convention.
