Implementing the Principles of the Public Participating Convention in International Organizations

This background document outlines a study intended to explore how the draft Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-Making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters can be used to increase public participation within international decision-making processes and organizations.

• The study aims to identify and promote the principles of the draft Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-Making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters within international organizations and environmental decision-making processes, rather than providing a critique of the draft Convention itself.
• The research will evaluate existing public participation opportunities in international fora involving UNECE Member States to determine how international institutions currently promote these principles and how future Parties to the Convention can further enhance them.
