Why We March for Science

A statement by the Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) expressing support for the March for Science on April 22, 2017, and highlighting the importance of science-based criteria for regulating endocrine disruptors chemicals (EDCs), particularly within the European Union.

• CIEL supports the March for Science to defend the role of science in government, health, and safety, arguing that attempts to undermine science constitute an attack on facts, which are essential for creating government policy and implementing safety guidelines.
• The European Union currently lacks science-based identification criteria for endocrine disruptors chemicals (EDCs), which are substances that interfere with the hormone system and are linked to cancers, infertility, and neurological disorders. This absence of criteria has created a legal vacuum that allows these substances to remain in food, water, and daily products.
• Industry-sponsored actors have delayed the implementation of EDC identification criteria and generally attack scientific discoveries that challenge commercial activities by sabotaging scientists, hiding results, and using industry-funded science to create false controversy.
